A few weeks ago I found a few yards of a fantastic vintage print at the thrift store. It was one of those moments..you know...when you fall in love with a fabric after only seeing a few inches of it...then there's a few yards and you know you'll buy it no matter the price...then you see the price...and you know it was meant to be!!! I live for moments like this. The thrifting fairies have been very kind to me lately!!!
I knew I wanted to make a jumper for my little girl with it, and found a great pattern in my mom's collection from which she sewed jumpers for my sisters and I. There's something timeless and fulfilling about this kind of sewing. The pattern is a size five and I needed it in a 4 so I just took it in a little on the side seams and cut the front and back panels a bit smaller. I left the seams wide on the side so it can be taken out when needed. I can see it being worn as a jumper, tunic, etc for a long time. I also made a little kerchief to go with it. My parents recently went to Germany (my Dad is from there!) and commented that all the little girls wore kerchiefs...a great way to keep hair out of little faces! Well...the jumper was received with great joy and orders for kerchiefs have been placed in dozens of fabrics!!!
She was very involved with telling me a long, involved, and very detailed story!!
There has been lots and lots of time spent on the swings lately. Which I love!! There is something so free and liberating and fulfilling in swinging free. Quite a bit of effort has been spent on inventing "new" ways to swing. Free style swinging!! We wear a lot of leggings to keep little bums covered no matter what kind of silly fun is going on...always a good idea (the silly fun and the leggings)!!!
Can you see flecks of paint still in her hair from painting!!! There really wasn't much interest in letting Mom scrub it out!!
Sigh...! I love my little elf!

I LOVE that fabric. So, I have a question for you. I don't know how much you quilt, and when you quilt how much you use a rotary cutter to make strips, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to square off my fabric so it doesn't bow in the middle of the long strip. Do you know what I mean? I've looked at books and even had a few people show me, but I'm still doing something wrong. Any tips on that??

Lisa - I do love to quilt and don't know what I would do without my rotary cutter. I do know exactly what you mean, and have had the same problem, but it definitely can be avoided. First, if you are cutting a long strip and folding the fabric over itself make sure you aren't using too many layers, and that they are folded very carefully. Secondly, fabric stretches and will pull under the big ruler so make sure it is layed as perfectly flat as you can...and hold the ruler down in the middle to keep everything flat and even. Practice practice practice...which means lots of quilting...which is always wonderful!!!
