Laundry Detergent Watering Can

Now that we can finally say that spring has arrived here in New England, a big part of our day is spent in the garden.  With new plants growing we realized that little hands need watering cans.  Each pair of hands with their own being best….!  In an effort to not leave our home or spend any money I (yup…sometimes I’m a cheap little hermit!!!) racked my brain for an idea and remembered this project that I saw somewhere a million years ago….watering cans out of laundry detergent containers.  Here’s what we did!

Okay…just to start off we still use, and love, this homemade laundry detergent, but for a few months after we moved (I’m not even sure why…!) we were buying detergent and had a few empty containers that hadn’t made it out of the basement recycling bin yet.  So out they came!  This is the simplest project and super quick too…because we had some thirsty plants waiting!

How to Make a Watering Can from a Laundry Detergent Bottle

What you’ll need:

Empty laundry detergent bottle.

Cordless drill and “smallish”  bits.

And…that’s it…unless your littles want to embellish their watering cans…in which case you’ll need papers, stickers, markers, etc, and a bit of mod-podge.

What you’ll do:

1. Rinse your bottle thoroughly to ensure the suds are all gone.

2.  Remove the cap from the bottle and using a small bit drill holes in the top of the cap.  I found a couple things to be helpful in this…first, hold the cap tight, and also be sure the drill bit is turning before it touches the cap.  The holes do not need to be in any sort of particular pattern…whatever suits your fancy!

3.  Drill a hole in the top of the handle to allow air in so the water flows nicely.

4.  Embellish the sides of the bottle in any fashion imaginable with paper, stickers, drawings, etc, give it a generous coat of mod podge, let it dry, and you’ll be on your way to the garden!

And that’s it…just four steps…I really can’t drag it out to more…it’s just that simple.  Here’s a few (or a lot! depending on if you’re my mother!) visual steps for you!!!
